Repairing torn, cracked and creased photos
Tears, folds, cracked emulsion and missing corners — how each is repaired, and how to send a torn photo so nothing is lost.
The kinds of damage
- Creases and fold lines — usually the easiest to repair completely.
- Cracked emulsion — a web of fine cracks on old glossy prints and glass-plate negatives. We remove the cracks while keeping the real texture underneath.
- Tears — the two sides are lined up and the line between them is rebuilt.
- Missing pieces and corners — the background, clothing or furniture is rebuilt to match. When a missing piece includes part of a face, we tell you how much can be rebuilt faithfully.
Sending a torn photo
- Do not tape it — tape yellows and pulls the image layer off later.
- Lay the pieces next to each other on a dark surface, as close as they fit, and scan or photograph them together.
- Send all the pieces, even the tiny ones — a small piece of an eye matters.
Which level to choose
On our prices: Standard covers creases, cracks, stains and small tears. Choose Severe for large missing areas or many pieces. Not sure? Choose Standard — we look at the photo first and tell you before we start if it needs a different level.
